With all the hoo-ha about tax avoidance by those big faceless corporations, more and more people are being more choosy where they shop this Christmas. The following are my recommendations of artists’ websites where you can buy amazing, original gifts… and they’re all local too (if you live in Brighton, that is).
Rockcakes – Quirky, funky jewellery… lots of very affordable pieces and plus more precious ones to lust over.
Frances Bloomfield – Frances Bloomfield’s ‘Dreamboxes’ explore dream narratives and are made of found objects. Bewitching.
Graham Carter – One of the founders of Boxbird Gallery in Hove produces amazing screen prints and 3D wooden collages.
Polly Paper Cuts – Really sweet and clever paper cuts.
Kevin Meredith –Wood block mounted photographs, look fab as a set.
Ruth Green – Lovely, lovely prints and illustrated gifts.
Castor & Pollux – My favourite shop in Brighton. I can’t walk along the seafront without going in here (and usually buying something, oops). Just the best selection of books, prints, jewellery, textiles, pottery and other lovely covetable things. Sigh…
